Pedal-assist descriptions often name a torque sensor or a cadence sensor without explaining what the rider should expect. These sensors measure different inputs. They do not, by themselves, tell you the motor's power or whether you will enjoy riding the bike.
What each sensor reads
A torque sensor measures the force applied through pedaling. A cadence sensor measures crank rotation or pedaling speed. The controller uses sensor information to decide how to provide assistance. Torque-based assistance generally responds to changes in pedal effort. Cadence-based assistance can provide help when you turn the pedals, according to the selected mode and controller settings. The exact response depends on the system, so avoid treating either description as a promise about every bike using that sensor.
Ask about behavior, not just the component
If you are buying online, ask these questions before asking which system is "better":
- How does assistance begin from a standing start?
- What changes between the lowest and highest assist settings?
- What happens when I stop pedaling?
- Can the seller provide the control instructions for this model?
- Does the specification describe this exact version of the bike?
A clear answer about startup behavior is more useful than a claim that the bike feels "natural." That word can mean different things to different riders.
A short test-ride worksheet
Use a permitted, traffic-free area and follow the bike's operating instructions. Start with low assistance. There is no need to test maximum output to decide whether you like the controls.
Write down your observations after the ride:

Sensor type does not tell you battery capacity, motor location or whether a throttle is fitted. A torque sensor also does not prove a particular range figure. Those questions need their own specifications and evidence.
For a useful comparison, try to keep the riding conditions similar and use a bike that fits. A poor fit or an unfamiliar gear can distract from what you are trying to evaluate.
Choose the control behavior you understand and can use comfortably. Before paying, get the sensor specification and operating instructions in writing for the exact model you will receive.
