How to Charge and Store an E-Bike Battery Safely

Battery care begins with the charger supplied or recommended for the exact battery, a suitable charging area, and a quick inspection before you connect anything. The product manual takes priority over general advice because charging limits and storage instructions can differ between battery systems.

Before every charge

  • Use only the charger provided with or recommended for the bike and battery.
  • Inspect the battery case, connector, cable, plug, and charge port for damage, moisture, dirt, or unusual heat.
  • Do not charge a battery that is swollen, cracked, leaking, water-damaged, or behaving differently after an impact.
  • Place the battery and charger where they will not be covered, struck, or exposed to water.
  • Keep the charging area away from flammable materials and make sure the bike or charger does not block an exit.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises owners to follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions, use the recommended charger, remain present while charging, and avoid charging while asleep or away from home. See the CPSC Micromobility Information Center for its current guidance.

While the battery is charging

Keep the charger and battery uncovered so heat can dissipate. Check them periodically. Stop charging if you notice persistent overheating, a new odor, leaking, a change in shape or color, smoke, or unusual sounds. Move away from the area and contact emergency services if there is an immediate fire or smoke hazard.

Unplug the charger when charging is complete according to the product instructions. Do not modify the charger, battery, connectors, or battery management system. A plug that happens to fit does not prove that a charger has the correct voltage, current, or control behavior.

Why the battery and charger must be treated as a system

Battery safety is not determined by the cells alone. Charging hardware, the battery management system, wiring, motor controls, and their integration all matter. Routine storage

Store the battery in a dry place away from direct sunlight, heaters, freezing conditions, and combustible materials. Protect it from impact and from metal objects that could contact the terminals. Do not leave the pack fully depleted for an extended period.

For longer storage, use the charge level and inspection interval stated in the battery manual. There is no single storage percentage that should replace the manufacturer’s instructions for every pack. Check the battery periodically for physical changes and confirm that its storage location remains dry and clear.

Removing and reinstalling the pack

Switch the bike off before removing or installing the battery. Support the pack with both hands and avoid forcing the lock or connector. Before riding, confirm that the battery is fully seated and locked. If it does not fit as shown in the setup instructions, stop and contact EYBAIKC support rather than altering the mount.

Transport and shipping

Protect the battery from impact and prevent objects from reaching its terminals during ordinary transport. Commercial shipping and air travel are different. Lithium batteries are regulated hazardous materials, and the requirements depend on how the battery is packed and transported.

Do not mail or fly with a large e-bike battery based on general internet advice. Ask the carrier for its current rules and provide the battery information it requests. When to stop using the battery

Stop using and charging the pack after a serious impact, immersion, case deformation, exposed wiring, persistent overheating, or a sudden unexplained change in behavior. Do not open the enclosure or attempt a cell-level repair. Contact support with the bike model, order information, clear photographs, and a description of what happened. Keep lithium batteries out of household rubbish and ordinary recycling collections. Ask a local battery recycler or hazardous-waste facility how to arrange appropriate disposal; follow any recall-specific disposal instructions. See the CPSC battery disposal guidance.
